Kai Tak Sports Park Receives the Final Shipment For the Main Stadium’s Retractable Roof Steel Structure
Our Kai Tak Sports Park project achieved a significant milestone on 6 July with the arrival of the final shipment of the retractable roof steel structure.
The retractable roof is one of the key features of the Main Stadium of Kai Tak Sports Park. The entire roof comprises 15,000 tonnes of structural steel, with a main truss span of 180 metres, and includes over 4,800 tonnes of retractable roofing on the east and west sides. Using the geographical advantage of the stadium’s proximity to the harbour, the retractable roof trusses, after fabrication in Zhongshan and Dongguan, were divided into eight components to Hong Kong.
The project team has been fully harnessing the power of a digital twin to construct the Main Stadium. The digital twin enables our project team to predict and solve problems, optimise design and engineering solutions for the method statement and each single safety step for the construction of the retractable roof; it is more accurate, and more efficient! And it has been made accessible to frontline workers, thus addressing challenges in training, workflow and operations.
Hydraulic Strand Jack Lifting is another engineering technique that we have adopted during the construction of the retractable roof. This has also greatly increased installation and construction efficiency, work quality and safety.
Mr Kenneth Ma, Deputy Managing Director of Hip Hing and Director (Design and Build) of Kai Tak Sports Park Limited expressed, “The arrival of the final shipment is a remarkable milestone. It would not have been possible without the collective and collaborative effort of Hip Hing’s project and design team, Kai Tak Sports Park Limited, Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau and their consultant team, our business partners, and other stakeholders. While we reflect on what we have accomplished, we also look ahead to the future milestones with renewed energy. We have set the bar high to support the Government to meet its sports development objectives, and we shall continue to strive for safety, quality and excellence in our project delivery processes.”
