Hip Hing wins HK$2.24 billion contract for the construction of Xiqu Centre at the West Kowloon Cultural District
Xiqu Centre is located at the eastern gate of the West Kowloon Cultural District. Its contemporary architectural design is enriched with traditional Chinese characteristics, like a glowing lantern partially covered by a beamed curtain. It houses a 1,100-seat main theatre, which is above a weather protected public open space for social events and celebrations. Such arrangement enables the Xiqu Centre to infuse arts and culture into local communities.
The project involves the construction of a 9-storey performance theatre with a two-level basement, long span steel trusses for roof structures and associated external works. Though intensive pre-construction planning and carefully considered construction methods, the project team is confident in overcoming the challenges of providing temporary support to facilitate the excavation and lateral support system. The team also adopts an efficient construction approach to build the bottom and top of the Centre at the same time. This approach ensures the project to be completed at pace. On sustainability, the team aims to attain Gold Rating under the BEAM Plus.
