Taking 3 years of construction, the CLP Kai Tak Cable Tunnel has an important role in lighting up the Kai Tak development area. This project involved the construction of an underground utilities tunnel above the Kai Tak vehicle tunnel. During construction the project team, implemented specific environmental and safety measures to minimize the impact and risks involved. This included: reuse of sea mud as backfill materials to reduce the waste discharge; the use of an RC loader in lieu of hand dug work to lower workers' time in the tunnel environment; and welding was substituted by bolted connections for the E&M installation inside the tunnel to minimize safety risks associated with working in confined spaces.
